More About Times Square

Times Square

You may know from some of my previous posts and your own experience that Times Square is located in the heart of Manhattan, was originally called Longacre Square, is the location of the primary TKTS booth, and that it’s the site of the annual New Year’s Eve ball drop attended by hundreds of thousands of people.

You probably don’t know that Broadway, which runs directly through Times Square, was often referred to in the past as “the country road all the way to Albany,” as it follows (as US Route 9 today) a native American footpath northward from Manhattan into the Bronx, Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess, Columbia, and Rensselaer Counties, finally crossing the Hudson River into Albany.  But there are many little-known historic and culinary treasures in Times Square (shown on another episode of Toni On! New York), including:

-  Café Edison in the Hotel Edison on 47th Street reportedly has the best Grilled Cheese sandwich in the City!

-  St. Andrews Restaurant and Bar on 46th Street, where the chef wears a kilt, reputedly has the best Shepherd’s Pie in the City, at a lunchtime steal of only $14.95

-  Poseidon Bakery on 9th Avenue claims that they are the only one in the country that makes Phyllo by hand

-  The Knickerbocker Hotel at Broadway and 42nd Street, built in 1901, is now an office/condominium building, and its bar was once known as the 42nd Street Country Club

-  The Town Hall on 43rd Street, home to political speeches and music performances since 1921

-  New York Yacht Club on 44th Street, an exclusive club founded in 1844 and the base of America’s Cup.

Tip:  Brave the crowds to explore Times Square and the many things it has to offer.  And while you’re there, see what you think of the closing of the area to traffic!
