Lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree

The annual celebration surrounding the lighting of the Christmas Tree in Rockefeller Center will be held tomorrow night.  A little about the tree first: it’s a 9 ton, 74-foot high, 40-foot diameter Norway spruce that had been growing in Mahopac, New York at the home of an FDNY veteran who served at Ground Zero.  It’s been decorated with more than five miles of lights (30,000 bulbs) which with the star on top are the only decorations.  After the holidays, the tree is recycled and provided to Habitat for Humanity to build homes for the needy.

The ceremony, broadcast on NBC and attended by more than 100,000 people, is scheduled to include performances by celebrities that in the past have included Michael Buble, Aretha Franklin, Alicia Keys, Rob Thomas, Barry Manilow, Rod Stewart, The Muppets, and The Radio City Rockettes.
