A Different Kind of March Madness

This is the time of year that college basketball fans love – the NCAA Tournament, Sweet Sixteen, Elite Eight, and Final Four.  But I saw a twist on the traditional bracket in New York magazine.  They sent four sports fans (and apparently bar aficionados) to the four corners of the City, in search of the best sports bars, based on beer selection, food quality, TV density, crowdedness, ambience, and intangibles such as special deals and things to see (like memorabilia).  I won’t list all 32 here, but this is the Elite Eight (the last one listed is the grand champion):

– Rock Shop on Fourth Avenue in Brooklyn

– The Ainsworth on West 26th Street

– Strawberry’s Sports Grill on 235th Street in Little Neck, complete with Darryl Strawberry’s locker from Shea Stadium in one corner

– Bounce on Second Avenue at 73rd Street

– Stadium Grill on West 44th Street

– Wogie’s on Greenwich Avenue

– Red Star on Greenpoint Avenue in Brooklyn

– Standings on East 7th Street in the Village, with great beer, updated standings on a chalkboard, plenty of TVs, and “die-hard authenticity.”
