Secrets of New York – Deep New York

Another Christmas gift I received (I get a lot of good NYC stuff, huh?) is a DVD of a show that was aired on NYCTV called Secrets of New York.  It contains 4 chapters covering little-known secrets in the City.  The first chapter, Deep New York, is about things underground, and includes:

  • New York’s steam system, which pumps 30 billion pounds of steam each year beneath the streets to heat and cool more than 100,000 buildings in New York City (and on a cold day, you can see lots of it rising from below!).
  • A crypt under the Old St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Mulberry Street in lower Manhattan, which was built in 1809, the resting place of some famous New Yorkers, including Dominic Lynch, a ratifier of the U.S. Constitution.
  • The ornate (glass tiles, archways, curved platform, brass chandeliers, and leaded glass skylights) City Hall subway station, used from 1904 to 1945; the number 6 train still passes through it (empty, however) to turn around.
  • A secret train station 75 feet under Grand Central Terminal, which connects with another secret station under the Waldorf Astoria.  These were used to secretly transport President Franklin Roosevelt between the locations, thus hiding his disability from polio.
  • The valve control chamber of the New York water system, 250 feet beneath the Bronx, which controls the flow of 2 billion gallons of water every day.
  • And the new water tunnel #3, sinking up to 1000 feet underground – it will be 60 miles long when it’s completed in 2012.

A lot of interesting facts in this first chapter; I’ll share more with you shortly…
