In The Future, Will Cars Drive Us?

Think about it.  It seems that each year, cars are doing something that used to be done by the driver.  Navigating.  Controlling the temperature.  Fastening seat belts.  And now I read in USA Today some of the advanced safety features that manufacturers are now installing:

  • Lane-departure warning – it alerts you if you leave your lane, and sometimes even nudges the car back into your lane if you don’t react
  • Sensors for automatic brakes – if it senses that you’re about to hit something, it will alert you, activate the brakes, and even tighten the seat belts
  • Adaptive headlights – as you turn a corner, the headlights will actually shift in the direction of your turn so you can see what’s going on up ahead
  • Blind-spot detection – lights on your side view mirror will alert you when another car enters your blind spot so you don’t change lanes until it’s safe to do so

Estimates are that these four features could help avoid almost 2 million crashes – and 10,000 deaths – each years, so they are indeed significant improvements.  Talk about Batmobile!  Pretty soon, the cars may drive for us…
