Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks!

Many people associate Macy’s with the annual Thanksgiving Day Parade, which I’ve written about.  But Macy’s also sponsors the largest fireworks display in the country each July 4th for the past 36 years.  And this year, it is again along the Hudson River.  Here are some interesting facts about the display:

  1. It includes more than 40,000 shells (about 1,000 bursting every minute)
  2.  The shells are timed by computer to fire to the beat of the music
  3. More than 60,000 feet (that’s more than 10 miles!) of steel/fiberglass pipe to form the individual mortars from which the shells are launched
  4. The show uses more than 50 times the fireworks than the average fireworks show in the United States
  5. Musical entertainment will be provided by Katy Perry and Kenny Chesney.

NBC will broadcast the events live on Wednesday.  If you can make it in person, there are many viewing points along Twelfth Avenuebelow 59th Street.  Enjoy and celebrate!
