What is Manhattanhenge?

       Most us are probably somewhat familiar with Stonehenge, the prehistoric monument in England, destroyed in Hollywood when Chevy Chase knocked it down in European Vacation.  Its location and construction are such that the morning sun at the summer solstice shines between the pillars, creating a stunning view (above).  Theories about the purpose of its construction range from a place of healing to a place of sacrifice; we’ll probably never know the true reason. 


       But now Stonehenge has some American competition!  Manhattanhenge happens on the solstice, when the setting sun aligns perfectly with the east-west streets of Manhattan (see directly above).  Perhaps the Manhattan grid planners had some divine purpose behind their planning.  Healing?  Sacrifice?  Perhaps we’ll never know…
