I’m Gonna Win That Nobel Prize!

And exactly what makes me think that?

Dr. Franz Messerli, a cardiologist at St. Luke’s – Roosevelt Hospital in New York, conducted research to determine whether there is a correlation between a country’s level of chocolate consumption and the cognitive function of the population of the country.  But since there is no agreed-upon measure of cognitive function of a population, he decided to use the number of Nobel laureates per capita.  As research, he compared the chocolate consumption and Nobel laureate density of 23 countries.

And the results were pretty amazing; at the top of the list were Switzerland, Sweden, and Denmark, with the highest levels of both Nobel laureates and chocolate consumption, with China, Japan, and Brazil at the bottom.  Cocoa contains flavanols, which are also abundant in red wine.

The bad news: the results of Dr. Messerli’s study were published in the New England Journal of Medicine, a highly respected journal in the medical field, but they were published as a “note,” (rather than as a study), meaning that the hypothesis was not tested in a “prospective, randomized trial.”  And one Nobel laureate took it a step further, saying that if you want a “Nobel prize it pretty much has got to be dark chocolate.”

And there you go.  What am I having for dinner?  Pizza, red wine, and dark chocolate…

But Swiss chocolate is light-eh? You had me until the end. Was willing to ingest Reese’s for the cause.

  2. Charron's Chatter Says:

You make quite a compelling case! Enjoy this experiment, sir–I know you will. (as an aside: dark chocolate has so many health benefits, you couldn’t go wrong on that benefit alone)
