The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Will Be Lighted Tonight!

The annual celebration surrounding the lighting of the Christmas Tree in Rockefeller Center will indeed happen tonight.  A little about the tree first: it’s a 75-foot high, 11-ton Norway spruce that had been growing in Oneonta, NY.  It’s been decorated with more than five miles of lights (50,000 bulbs) which with the Swarovski Crystal star on top (that contains 3 million crystals and weighs 900 pounds!) are the only decorations.  After the holidays, the tree is recycled and provided to Habitat for Humanity to build homes for the needy.

Like many other events, this year’s lighting will be different, with no public access to the lighting.  The lighting will broadcast from 8-10 tonight on NBC and be hosted by Al Roker, Hoda Kotb, Savannah Guthrie, and Craig Melvin, with special performances on many NBC affiliates for an hour before the broadcast.  So sit back and enjoy!
