The Beacon Theatre

beacon-theatre1

You may know that this world-famous theater is located on Broadway (at 74th Street), and has been the home to many superstar performances.

You probably don’t know that the Beacon has been closed for the past seven months for major restoration, and that it reopens tonight.   It first opened its doors on Christmas Eve 80 years ago (1929) with a showing of the movie Tiger Rose.  In the following years, it was the venue of many superstar performances, including Bob Marley, Queen, the Rolling Stones, and James Taylor.  Upcoming acts this year include BB King, Allman Brothers, Bryan Adams, and Paul Simon, who will perform tonight at the reopening celebration.  The historic 2,800 seat theater was designated as a national landmark in 1979.

Tip:  Tours are not provided, so try to attend a performance to get the full experience.  We passed the Beacon on our way to the Promenade Theatre to see Almost Heaven a few years ago.  Clay Aiken was scheduled to perform the following weekend…but we never made it to that.
